New, were to start?

by TankerBob on Mon May 23, 2011 1:46 pm

Hey everyone! I came to watch the races this past weekend and well I think now I am hooked and really want to give this a try. I used to race bikes on the north course, but having kids and the nature of my career has put that on hold indefinitely, but I still have the calling to race something. My son just turned 4 and I am looking forward to getting him on the kid cart someday.
The question I have though is where do I as the dad start. I would like to drive too! But I don't quite know which classes would be best to start with and which karts would be best to start with? There are so many choices and like bike racing it can get confusing!
The basic gist of my situation is this, I am 30 and mildly mechanically inclined from my days racing bikes. So I am basically looking for 2 Karts at a reasonable price, preferably used, 1 kid-kart and 1 adult (if you can call me that) beginner Kart.
I do see that I can rent them at beaverun, but since the schedule only goes until the 29th, I am also wondering if the rental sessions are still basically the same as 2010 or if they are different?

Well I look forward to meeting everyone, I already met a great mother of a racer trackside and if everyone is like her, then this is gonna be a great time!

Bob, if your interested I have a clone kart for sale in the classifieds. I planned on racing it this season at Beaverun but I decided to make the move to supercan for this season. It should have everything you need to get racing except for a kart stand. Also it would have everything you would need except for a kart stand. It comes race ready plus with lots of spare bodywork and some extra tires I could toss in to get you some seat time.

Hi Bob,

Glad you visited and had a good time! You'll have fun with the kids as well as getting on track yourself. For Senior you are looking at 4 options:

Clone
Yamaha
TAG
Shifter

They get faster as you go down the list and more expensive as well. Personally I'd suggest the Clone to start out as it'll be easy with your son - pull starter, low maintenance, close racing. It'll even idle around the track pretty easily so it is a great kart to do lead/follow with your young driver when the time comes to get him on track.

We have five Clones available now that you can come up and rent on a practice day or do a Test Drive program with.

The June schedule should be online soon - there will be a lot of open time to practice.
