FIRST ANNUAL “FATAL
AWARENESS CONFERENCE”
FRIDAY, 13TH SET TO EMPHASIZE DRIVING IS NOT TO BE TAKEN FOR GRANTED WITH
YOUNG TEEN DRIVERS
Wampum PA (4.10.07)
- The Pennsylvania DUI
Association in partnership with BeaveRun Motorsports Complex, Students
Against Destructive Decisions and members of the Beaver County DUI Task
Force will host the first annual "Fatal Awareness Conference" for high
school students in Beaver and Lawrence Counties on Friday, April 13, 2007
beginning at 9:00am at BeaveRun Motorsports Complex.
The number one cause of death for teens is motor vehicle crashes in the
United States, this conference is designed to impress upon the students in
attendance the importance of the do’s and don’ts while operating a motor
vehicle. It will give a glimpse on proper braking procedures which is often
the cause of a driver losing control of the car, reinforce seat belt use as
your number one defense in a crash, impaired driving and the dangers of
compromising your nervous system with the use of alcohol or drugs
(prescription or illegal) and why speeding can lead to deadly consequences
particularly in a young driver lacking the skills or experience to react in
a tense moment on the road.
The hands on demonstrations and presentations are designed to make a
difference in a young driver’s attitude and reactions and give them a
glimpse of why driving is a privilege and not something to be taken lightly
or for granted. Friday, the 13th was chosen because of the superstitions
surrounding it and the date is considered to be ill-fated by many and
decision making is often put off because it is an “unlucky” day. Although
there are also legends and myths that say Friday the 13th can be viewed as a
day for growth, and opportunity and is really a lucky day as in ancient
times when 13th was thought to donate a higher level of awareness…..the hope
of the organizers, hosts and sponsors of this young driver conference and to
impress upon these students that one wrong decision can alter a person’s
life forever.
