Cadets Battle to the End as Santee Wins Race
& Championship
Wampum, PA
(September
24, 2007) - The 2007 BeaveRun Championship Karting Series featured close
racing, close finishes and close points battles. No group better represented
the competitiveness of the growing program than the eight to twelve year
olds in the Cadet class though as the last race, and the 2007 Championship,
went down to the final lap before Breyton Santee prevailed.
Thirty-one
cadets, including five different winners, took the green flag over the
course of the season featuring a regular contingent of racers that have
developed in to national caliber talent. Fifteen entries turned up for the
final race including defending Champion Jacob Donald, Trent Walko and
Santee, all with a shot at the title. Walko won the Pole and then edged
Donald by just .002 seconds in the Heat race. The trio diced back and forth
swapping the lead several times in the twelve lap feature before Santee took
the point with just two to go. The North Kingsville, Ohio racer then sliced
through lapped traffic creating enough of a gap over Walko to win by just
.237 seconds, securing his first BeaveRun title!
The
youth movement was well represented in the Kid kart ranks as well with
regulars PJ Molnar, Shane Killen and Elijah Ciotti in the Unrestricted class
along with a Restricted class featuring Chase Smith, Savannah Fitzgerald and
Diamond Harper in her first ever outing.
The
closest finish of the day came in the Yamaha Junior Supercan class where
Blaise Haynes topped Sewickley, PA’s Andy Schlosser by a scant .088 seconds.
The top four karts, including Michael Roloson of Ravenna, Ohio in third and
Grant Cain in fourth, finished just .654 seconds apart. For Haynes, his
second win of the season helped lock up second in points while Schlosser’s
second place finish secured a top five in the final standings.
Seven shifters were in attendance for the final race of the season which
featured a tight finish between Noah Stark in his 125 and Jeff DeMello
aboard his Stock Shifter. DeMello nearly pulled off the upset, coming up
just .189 seconds short of an overall win but still scoring his second class
win of the season.
Jim
Miller was once again the dominant force in the Yamaha Heavy class winning
his fourth race in a row. The win pushed Miller to second in points in the
class. The story of the day for the Yamaha Heavy class though was the
turnout of seven karts, a season high for a division that has been showing
steady growth since the middle of the season. This class is expected to be
even bigger in 2008 with the news that several racers are planning on making
the move to Yamaha Heavy.
John Bokovitz became the seventh different winner in the TAG class in 2007
trumping John Flucker and Jeremiah Johnson for the top spot. The three
racers were consistently within a few tenths of each other throughout the
day. Flucker’s seventh podium of the year helped secure the TAG
Championship for the eighteen year old Clinton, PA driver.
For
Johnson, the third place finish ended a busy day that saw him enter two
classes to help bolster his chances in the Bertil Roos Challenge. The effort
paid off for the northeast Ohio karter as he jumped in to a tie for fifth
overall in the Challenge. The top ten point scorers will be entered in a
drawing for a Three Day Road Racing School from Bertil Roos (www.racenow.com).
Jim Miller and Noah Stark led the way in the final points tally that awarded
equal parts participation and performance. The system worked perfectly as
every racer that attended all five races in the Challenge earned a shot at
the Grand Prize.
The
winner of the Bertil Roos Challenge will be announced at the final event on
the BeaveRun calendar for 2007, the Sixth Annual Great Pumpkin Race
presented by Mach 1 Kart. “The Pumpkin” is a two day non-points event on
October 20-21 designed to bring everyone together for a fun event before the
long off season.
